When I started writing this post, I realized it was everywhere and as much as I have tried to put the point across, I doubt if I have done a great job but please be patient.
I was managing my life after reading some posts here about accepting your body with its flaws and all. I am not some insecure person so I digested all the posts on that while ‘feeling myself’, then I heard this ….‘See your black ass’. I laughed off the comment and even twerked just to prove a point but it got me thinking.
This is how it happened. I was in my cute nightie, the type that is basically bum shorts and flimsy top. I was feeling flawless when suddenly bae was like ‘see your black ass’. See me see wahala, I am a dark person, what color is my ass supposed to be please? After laughing, he said he was joking in the most serious voice he could muster through the laugh but I did not believe him. After all, he could have said ‘see your black face, hand or knee or elbow’ instead of that one place that is slightly darker than the rest of your skin. Well, this started my probe.
You see, everyone wants or strives for the flawless body and we all know it is VERY hard to get there so, you just come to a point where you accept yourself the way you are. This perfection is relative but for me, it is flawless skin. You know, where there is a continuous flow of skin from any point, elbows, knees that are all evenly toned. Unfortunately, my young days as a tomboy saw me getting into rough activities that saw me get hurt and cut severally so that has limited my greatness in the flawless skin department. Knowing this, I still went ahead to try to make the dream a reality by taking some necessary steps.
I went to a popular pharmacy (it felt like a health issue to me x_x ) and met an assistant, after telling her I need my butts to be the same color as my thighs, she laughed and recommended a small cream. I bought it but after using it aggressively on my derrière for a week, nothing changed! Bae laughed his head off and as for me, well, I guess I should have listened when I-go-die, the comedian, said, ‘No matter how one bleaches, the butt (+crack) and its accompanying lady parts never cooperate.’ LOL!
Second, The Punch newspaper must have had a fly on the wall when this conversation above happened because this post came up 2 days after this discussion. They did try to explain it down to basic melanin hormone doing @#$%^^&**%(&^%&^ (Yea, some medical grammar).
The darkening mainly starts at puberty when sex hormones tend to increase and in the process, the melanin hormone, which is responsible for skin & hair colour would also be produced. So, the production of the melanin alongside estrogen & testosterone (they regulate the melanocyte that produces melanin cells) makes the sexual organs to darken.
The post basically said, some other thing also contribute to these darkening like, obesity, pregnancy (lots of estrogen) friction between thighs/armpits, diabetes (necks and armpits) and the main being sexual activity. As you stimulate yourself and release all these hormones, they just go and sit in your ass. Well, not that way but you get the gist. So, the more sexually active you are, the darker the ‘abunan’ will be.
Wait o, please don’t tell me I am the only one with a darker booty that wished it was as fresh as the thighs! Well, I have just embraced them and they are really not that obvious so I am all good…accepting my flaws *side eye*.
You will not be lighter there, it is nature the African way but you can epp yourself by;
- If you are on the heavy side, wear some form of tights to prevent your thighs from rubbing together all day.
- Wash areas you sweat from regularly and scrub well, armpits and groin especially.
- Watch your sugar intake to avoid diabetes so if you notice your necks and armpits getting darker than usual, please see a doctor just to be sure.
- STOP having sex oo!! LOL! I did not say this; your hormones and some doctor advised it.
- I hear shaving mainly with blades also makes the groin area dark too. I don’t know how true but i believe it. So use clippers/cream as often as possible over blades.
- Google is your friend!
I don’t even have to ask if anyone has been in a relationship and noticed that their partners are darker down there. The question is, does it bother you, and will you change it if you could? Wish I could read one comment about a guy who has met a lady that has succeeded in making herself extremely light everywhere except the down below that has refused to co-operate and how such a guy reacted when confronted with this extreme clashing scenario.
P.S: If your body is the same from head to toe, please park far, you cannot join this discussion and lament with us *tongue out*.
