“Personal Branding is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands. While previous self-help management techniques were about self-improvement, the personal-branding concept suggests instead that success comes from self-packaging.”
No one wants to go inside a shop to buy a no-name brand unless its mid-month. No-name brands are cheaper than the original, smell the same but not authentic, can still get the job done but do not last. In short no-name products sell but clients get disappointed along the way because they do not deliver the same results.
As a woman your presence is important, be it at church in your community or at work. My mother is well known in the community for being a giver, out-spoken and her love for children. Every time I visit home, I smile and wave because I am linked to this woman. It may be your personality or character; it does not have to bring in money but it can lead you to something great. The way that we package and present ourselves is very important it reflects who we are.
Personal branding for me means finding my strongest point or strength and working on it. At the same time, it means working on my personality and doing some introspection now and again to check my life. The things that people say about you may be true or false, in fact it is part of your self-packaging. Any brand is criticized over its short falls but it is never taken off the shelves because there are strengths there as well. Most women do not consider that they are representing their own brands which is themselves and shut down opportunities that may be looking for people like them.
First of all, the way that you look as a person is important. Brush your teeth, Shave anything that grows hair, trim your eyebrows, work on those lashes, keep mints and tissues in your bag. The first thing that a person sees when you talk to them is your face. Please consider a smile. The second think that they see is your hands, the firm handshake. Keep your nails clean and tidy. The third part is your costume: know what suites you, know your skin tone and colour combination goes together. Finally work that heel but not all of us can wear heels so make sure you are comfortable in those shoes. Products that sell are the ones that are nicely packaged and draw clients to them. The inside however, is yet to be tested.
Have confidence and believe in yourself. Make your surroundings know what you believe in and do not compromise on that unless it’s worth it. You will earn respect and recognition just because people will know who you are and your beliefs. The conversations that you have with people will be more solid and you may be touching lives through those conversations. I am not saying there is no room for jokes, there is but remember, you are judged by words of mouth. Self-packaging leads to greater things and employment opportunities that you never dreamed of. Sometimes you hear people talking about being misunderstood, maybe your packaging is not clear. If you are a sugar container and you are carrying tea bags, then no one will believe that you actually carry sugar sometimes hey. Stay true to what you believe in and make sure the message is loud and clear. Do not mistake self-promotion for bragging. Bragging is a huge turn off and you do not want to do that.
If you decide to go out, the corporate world does not allow us to get drunk, dance on top of tables and forget our names, especially if you are a lady. I remember one time our employer called a staff meeting after one of the employees was seen in the daily newspaper dancing and holding a beer bottle. We were told that the actions of our fellow officer were wrong and he did not represent the company well. Wherever you go, people will recognise you and link you with something you are doing, so you better be well behaved.
Women brands sell faster because we are able to think on our feet and multi-task. So why not package yourself in the way that you would like to be known. Push your brand against all limitations and remember that failure is one of those things to be embraced. You do not, however, want to push yourself so hard until you reach your breaking point because then you lose everything you have worked towards.
What does your personal brand say about you?
