I was traveling from Port Harcourt to Lagos by bus. First, they wasted our time before “taking off”, we were still trying to recover from the vex when this man decided he wants to use us to test viability of his calling. He sha started, “let us pray”. Mind you, a pastor just prayed before we started moving o. It wasn’t up to 5 minutes and this guy wanted to pray again (but it’s fine, the bible did not put boundaries to prayers, so let’s pray). Maybe the other Pastor’s prayer did not reach heaven, so he wanted to give it extra push for it to get to God. He sha led prayer.

Guess What?

That was our opening prayer into Church service. Next thing Baba invites the “choir”= Himself. Before we knew, he was singing worship song. “My brothers and sisters, join me and sing to the Lord. It is by his grace that we are in the sanctuary and not the mortuary, give him thanks…Baba Baba Baba, Baba…ese o Baba…” Luckily for him, some people sang along. There was now praise and worship, “Good Morning Jesus, Good morning Lord….” Next thing “Prayer of intercession, deliverance, supplication, personal request etc.”

This man actually went further to do testimony, I was almost convinced he would collect offering. Next thing he started preaching sermon. He was even asking “members of the congregation” to read for him. I was astonished. You know this thing they do where they’d ask someone to read a part of the bible, then, they’ll echo it like we can’t hear, that’s what he was doing. Classic bus preaching, John Chapter one verse one, “In the beginning was the word”, he’ll now elongate and emphasize some words. It was funny mehn… I gave up trying to sleep because he was shouting to the point where his veins were coming out and baffing people with his “holy saliva”. He started saying wearing trouser is a sin, attachment is a sin, pressing your phone when your pastor is preaching (my sub I think cuz I was doing all).

He now started another prayer session. This was a different prayer genre. This type of prayer was accompanied by worship songs. Sing for 5 minutes, pray for 10 minutes. I was like, this is all night in the day time. Let’s call it, “all day”. He even did the classic, Lift up your hand to heaven thing. My biggest fear was that it would last the whole journey. It was crazy mehn. After 3 hours, it finally came to an end to the glory of God.

I don’t get why people like invading people’s space because I think evangelism is like advertising. Jesus is a brand and you are trying to convince me to subscribe to the belief, don’t just be an average marketer and just be cold calling, cold emailing, choking it down my throat saying, “subscribe or die” and all of that. Be brand conscious. Do it the inbound way. Meet me at my comfort zone where I would be receptive and don’t start by selling your brand. Start by finding a common foot, add value, find my challenges, offer solutions or make yourself attractive enough for me to ask by myself. Connect to me as an individual. One size does not fit all. We are like 15 people or so in a bus, you can’t preach to us all in the same way. It is easier for a Pastor to do that to his congregation because they all made the decision to be members of the church but this is a bus not your ministry, whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. If you don’t have the patience to minister to us as individuals, focus on one soul and convert the person or minister to me with your lifestyle, do me a favor please… Gerrarahere! Don’t make the already uncomfortable bus ride even more uncomfortable with your loud voice trying to burst my eardrums and depriving me from well deserved sleep that gives me the illusion of a shorter journey.

On a brighter side, the man gave me branding tips and showed me things not to do or do while “inbound marketing” my product. Thank you bus evangelist.

Love,
Einsteinette.

Hehehehehehe… I am an atheist and I believe everyone has a right to believe in whatever they want to. However, I will come out and tell the bus pastor that “Bros, this your sermon never do? You are beginning to disturb me with your rants”. I cannot stand these idiots who think the Lord sent them to invade my personal space and make me more averse to his message. Ten minutes tops, anything longer and the Pastor and I will be in a holy war.

So one day my friend & I decided to go & find woman in another state. One “evangelist” at the park starts preaching and she says “this journey you’re going on is a battle and pray for your enemy to die bla bla”. Immediately I laughed out loud and said i am going to find punani & truthfully I don’t need my enemy dying yet. That is how this woman started subbing me in her prayer.

This people have no respect for space at all. I am yet to see a Muslim or traditionalist doing this. ALWAYS CHRISTIANS in my own experience.
The one that pisses me off after all their sermon, is OFFERING. They must collect it. Why can’t they tell me about their God and not collect money?
Come & teach about prosperity but UNCLE you look like poverty is even ashamed to be associated with you.

Lastly as humans, If you pray to somebody so that another human can die. That says alot about you, your religion and who you serve.

    1. Vader
No it doesn’t say anything about your religion and who you serve,it only says volumes about you. Ma nigga fault the people who do not serve God as they should, don’t fault God. There are guidelines that are obviously not being followed. Or have you ever read anywhere that Jesus tried to kill his enemies? You might be an atheist, but please be logical in your reasoning. Your comments have been really close minded and extremely opinionated

I am one of those one-on-one bus evangelists.
The way the guy did it though, taking up everyone’s time.
Anyway I won’t preach to you his way.
I will use my way and conviction will come your way in Jesus name, amen.

Religion has finally succeeded in twisting our minds…
In a civilized society, folks understand the importance of not invading people’s privacy and comfort zones…
One time, I had to stand up from my seat and told the charlatan he was making me uncomfortable…
“I didn’t pay to be disturbed by your preaching”, Mini-Me told the Preacher!

Guess what! I got labelled an AntiChrist. One old woman said I was sent to suck their blood during the journey. See me wey no get witch teeth sef!

Our Breed needs to do better! Jesus would never do that!
I asked the old lady that labelled me a blood sucking fellow: “If a Muslim stands up to preach in this bus, would you allow him do so”. And that was how the old lady sank into her seat, and spoke no more!

That’s how we still got in an accident after praying for ‘journey mercies and safety.’ I wish I’d tackled our Reverend-on-wheels on that point.

By the way, Einsteinette, your ‘street glossary’ is on point!

When JESUS sent out his 12 disciples to preach, Matthew 10:14 says If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home, HE didnt ask them to force it down anybody’s throat, JESUS preached only to those who were willing to listen.
Also those people that preach before bus journeys and ask for offerings are fakes please, pay them no mind.
As christians, we don’t pray all those fall and die prayers, we are to show love to everybody including our enemies, Luke 6:35 – But Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting anything back. Then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
Lastly, i have gone out with my church to preach, we went to people’s houses and politely asked them if they could spare us a few minutes of their time to share the word with them, those that agreed, we precahed and those that refused we left alone. It is not by force, GOD Bless.
    1. CokeBoy
Psalms 55:15 – May my enemies die before their time; may they go down alive into the the world of the dead! Evils in their homes and in their hearts.

      16. but i call to the Lord God for help, and he will save me. ……….
      23. But you, O God will bring those murderers and liars to their graves before half their life is over. As for me, I will trust in you.

This a prayer verse(out of many others) from the bible that some pastors/ Christians have prayed to. You can say I have taken out of context so I honestly will like you to read the whole thing, explain to me, so i stop walking about ignorant. Thanks

I have attended Cele, Winners(HQ), MFM, Living Faith Foundation, COZA and I can certainly say this prayer has been prayed before. If i have time, i’ll actually go online to watch sermons and bring video evidence. So when you say “As christians, we don’t pray all those fall and die prayers”. Which one/church do you go to so I can start attending, I am actually very serious.

I wish I could comment on this thread but I can’t. My Spirit would not let me.
But let me say this: the same Bible says those who know their God shall be strong and do exploits.
Key phrase: those whom know their God.
      2. Miss James
I attend a couple of Churches, Covenant Christian Centre, Lagos (Pastor Poju Oyemade), House on the Rock, Lagos (Pastor Paul Adefarasin), Christ Family Centre, Makurdi, Gboko (Arome Tokula), Savannah Grace Chapel, Abuja (Arome Adah), I listen to Joseph Prince (New Creation Church Singapore) and non of these churches have taught me to pray this prayer.

When the Bible says He (God) has set a table before me in the PRESENCE of my enemies, I take it that they are living, correct me if I’m wrong. On the other hand, I have an enemy like Boko haram whom I wish death, but do i wish death for that colleague or neighbour of mine who hates me just because I ‘Claim’ to be born again and still wear trouser? Nahhh. And I don’t need to pray for Boko haram to die, they will sha just die or not come near my dwelling place.
        Thanks for your honesty.

Saying “to those who cared to listen” makes it feel Iike we careless about the things of God. Ecclesiastics also tells us about time “there is time for everything” Now we are travelling bishop. I know we should pray without season but that should be by our own conviction not someone trying to form spirikoko and making people feel like Evil spirit.

After the 1st short collective prayer, errbdy stay on your lane and pray.

        1. Blessing Abeng Post author
Does that mean loud prayers or just be spirit conscious and communicate with God all the time even in silence, not because someone is forcing you. I have heard different interpretations of that verse. Now that I think about it, no one prays 24 hours straight else you wouldn’t eat, bathe, do anything else, even preach. You won’t have a life. Plus there are times you should just listen and be silent.
      1. Miss James
What if I like to listen to music when i’m travelling or I just like to sleep? What if I pray every 6am, listen to God’s word by 9am, pray by 12, and then pray by 6pm. If the journey is between 12 and 6 and i’m watching a Man U match and they are losing, do you think i’d want to listen to your #preaching? BrotherPlixx
  7. DEJIDOPE
That was pre-JESUS, when JESUS came, He gave us only two commandments,1-Love your neighbour as you love yourself and 2-love your GOD with all you heart and with all your soul, mind and all your strength.
Luke 6;27-3-27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Luke 6;32- 32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount
If those prayers have been done in your church, then they have done e wrong thing, you can always correct them, we are human beings, we make mistakes sometimes.
1 john 4;7-12-7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
Vs 19-20-19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister

    1. CokeBoy
Pls correct me if I am wrong. Pre-Jesus means Old testament right? So I am guessing the verse i showed you is invalid anymore.
Does it apply to every verse in the old testament? If No, why not.

If it is not applicable then what is its context in the bible?

This is my thought, if it is not valid. Why is it in the bible then because these are the kind of texts people read literally and believe( I know they say holy spirit is suppose to teach but no be everybody get am). We have seen such manifest in the boko haram, isis etc sect.

Sorry i divert but one genuine question to anyone who wishes to answer: are cele under Christianity? I have always wondered this all my life because they don’t get no love from the winners, redeem & the likes.

      1. SeryxMe
Most times we fight against stereotypes but then we all use them daily. I like that you genuinely are asking a question that confuses many. The truth about Christianity is summed up in the verses where Jesus said many will call Him on the day of judgment and He will tell them He doesn’t know them. The fact is that they will even say they’ve performed miracles in His name but still He has nothing to do with them. That should tell you that whether a church is successful or very large or revered everywhere doesn’t mean they’re practising Christianity the right way.

If you understand that the devil has a free reign on the world now, you’d know that his major strength is deception. He duplicates what God has set up and uses it in a different way to distract people. All he needs to do is take people’s eyes and minds away from where it should be and focus it on something else.

The Bible provides the key to the principles of Christianity and a spiritual understanding of it is the only way to really grasp it. It’s not just a book to read and start interpreting. This is how we get different sermons from the same verses as well as different doctrines. You said not everybody has the Spirit to teach them, I say having the Spirit is the prerequisite to understanding the Bible, and yes, everyone can, and is supposed to, have the Spirit. That’s part of the reason you’re a Christian in the first place.

Once you understand the principles of Christianity, you’d know which churches are not actually practising it the way it ought to be done. No need to start naming names. But suffice it to say that many churches are just there for show. Nothing more. They add to the number of “Christians” in the world but are rarely building Christians in the real sense.

    2. Blessing Abeng Post author
Dear Deji, you seem to know a lot about “Christianity’ and you said something that reminded me of a question I want to ask. So we are supposed to love “sinners” and still not be equally yoked with them and not be found in their company but still tell them about God… I am genuinely lost.
      1. DEJIDOPE
Not been equally yoked with them is in terms of relationships, can’t date(marry) someone who isn’t a christian, who isn’t saved.
Not been found in their company means i can’t go to certain places, like for instance a strip club or a brothel, i have no business there as a child of GOD.
But as the time we do not hate these people that have not come to know GOD, remember when the people in the bible wanted to stone that woman for adultery, HE ended up saving her from death and told her to go and sin no more.
I don’t support same sex marriages for instance, but i will never harm, show hate to a homosexual person.
        Hope you understand now?
      1. Princewill
Hahahaaahahah the picture here is not a church scene it is rather a bus fellowship ( Where 1 man preaches and he still sings and collect his offerings) so quit passing the batin unto me ooo. Lmao!
  8. MADU
I just don’y know how these preachers think everyone is a Christian.

Sitting next to each other are Christians, Muslims, Traditionalists, Atheists…etc.

Just respect their rights to peace & quiet and stfu.

It’s really like selling wares, you call out to everyone and ppl interested buy.So even if you are not of the same religion doesn’t really matter, I think the problem lies in the manner of approach like trying to force it down your throat, being too loud and probably passing skewed messages
      1. stubborn geh
I guess that’s the problem right there! The bible says we should spread the good news but just like the Pharisees we’d rather spread news on damnation. If only people knew how to evangelize right. Sigh
    1. MADU
I get excited when the preachers get to the ‘women wearing trousers’ part.

Like I do peak with the corner of my eyes, at any lady in trousers around me just to see their reactions. ?? Epic!

The slight frown. The disgusted looks on their faces. ???

  9. SeryxMe
Many of these preachers understand little of what they’re talking about. They just pick a part of the Bible and run with it as far and as fast as they can. The moment anyone starts this in a bus I’m in, I rest my head on the seat in front, plug in my earphones and it’s music all the way to my destination. I can’t allow anyone to be guilt-tripping me because of religion. I understand enough to be bullied into religiosity.

My basic understanding: Christianity is a way of life. I’m struggling to attain this but that struggle I can accept. Not someone trying to pressure me in a bus without much courtesy for my little space. Abeg! Bus ministries can go and park well.

  10. Dee
I do not believe in invading people’s personal private space, and Nigerians can be very religious. Condemning people in other to get them to conform to your belief is also wrong, instead pray for them. Concerning the enemies prayers, the scripture says in Ephesians 6:12- For we wrestle not against flesh and blood (human) but against principalities and power, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in heavenly places. The enemy is the spirit of darkness (Satan), perpetuating this acts through people, the earlier a believer goes down in prayer to attack the real enemy, the better. Sometimes, these enemies come in different packages, can be urself, ur spouse, ur boss, colleague or whoever. Its d right of a Christian to rebuke the spirit involved and not hate the individual the spirit is using. That is why the greatest commandment is still love. Because this spirits can even come into a believer in a moment of their weakness. I hope I helped here.
Meanwhile, please also watch this movie WAR ROOM, to gain better perceptive.

What more can I say, Overzealous Evangelist going Overboard. The bus Operators too have a share of the blame, what happened to the No Preaching, No Hawking and No smoking tags in buses?
