How selfless can parents be?

I have seen many Nigerian women hit the road before the crack of dawn, stuffed in jalopy vehicles travelling long distances, to purchase loads of goods for sale. Some parents have plied every trade you can think of. Despite the discomfort, hazards and risks, they do this to spare the kids from lack.

The sacrifices made over the years are too numerous to mention. Most parents have had to swallow their pride on several occasions, borrowing from people with lots of begging and pleading. Because of their kids. What about those countless trips to the bank under the heat of the sun, just to pay in something into the account of that son or daughter who’s far away?

Many parents at different times buried their ego and did odd jobs for even younger people; sometimes swallowing insults from these ones. Many parents have been forced to sell off every damn property they own and cherish; also denying themselves luxury to ensure their kids get educated and experience a little bit of comfort.

When one considers all these, I don’t think anyone is qualified to make you sideline your parents or instill in your mind that they matter more than parents. Not even a spouse who’s only known you since yesterday.

Parents must always come first. They are the ones who will always be there in good or bad times, success or failure, dead or alive! No one else.

Nobody can, will, would’ve done everything your parents did for you. Even those times when you weren’t grateful enough, they still cared.

Parents are gods on earth, and we should treat them as such.

Parents are amazing. Love them. You gotta love them. But let’s not compare parental love with spousal love. It is not the same and it is comparable. Just like they found each other and parented you so will you and your spouse will for your children. It is called paying it forward.

There is a reason why when you start your own family, your spouse and children will become tournaments new “nuclear family” but you will always be your parents nuclear family and your children will always be yours.

Parenting is an honourable job and I have the utmost respect for their love and sacrifice
